Reflux Surgery / Hiatus Hernia & Fundoplication Surgery
Reflux or heartburn is often referred to by its acronym, GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). It can be a miserable condition that impacts your quality of life. It happens when the muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus fails to prevent the contents of your stomach from leaking up into the oesophagus. Sometimes it can be caused by a hiatus hernia that causes your stomach to bulge into your chest.
Surgical correction of reflux involves first repairing the diaphragm if a hernia is part of the problem. Then a procedure known as fundoplication is performed to help prevent stomach acid from flowing up from the stomach into the oesophagus.
